Extend a line on grade to a 3D length (not 2D)

It seems that when you extend a 3D line using Extend/Trim tool, no matter which option you choose, the line always extends to the 2D length (horizontal distance) and ignores the 3D (Slope) length.

Example: I have located the top and point along a raked pile on a grade of 1:-0.44. The pile is 8m long, the section I have located is 0.169m from the start of the pile down (all that is exposed).

I want to extend that line to 8m slope length, but using the extend line option only extends the line to 8m horizontally, making the slope distance far too long.

Even if I manually calculate the horizontal extension distance at 1:-0.44 grade, the command still makes the line too long as if it is incorrectly extending the line anyway.
