To automate sequential point labeling we can use Modify, Renumber point, this is a good tool.

However, where the option of by Number Order, or by Creation Order is not suitable, could there be an option of by Picked Order.

Also a facility to create independant sequential numbered labels would be good. These labels should not have to be associated with points, so there is considerable freedom how to place them. Included in this option could be a border style, colour, text size etc.
