Several users have asked how to extract ‘real-time’ elevations from lines, strings, arcs, etc. The current workflow I recommend is to temporarily create a perpendicular line as per the attached video. This will generate two points for the line with the interpolated elevation based on the distance between the two points. These points can then be deleted.
A useful function would be to have an inquiry tool that allows the user to see the elevation in real time based on the pointer location and even the stationing and offset relative to the line. Similar to when a DTM is nominated, and the curser location shows elevation extracted from the DTM, and if an alignment was nominated, the stationing and offset.
If this is simple enough then maybe step it up and provide a facility to show the elevation based on the distance from the line with a nominated gradient. (Kind of like a real time ‘set point elevation by reference elevation’ tool for perpendicular points to linework).
Thanks.
